According to Tim Hunt of Rabobank, Australia and New Zealand dairy exporters need to be aware of their markets because the U.S. dairy industry is growing fast and has comparable advantages. The U.S. dairy industry is comparably vast and is building very large farms at quick pace. Most U.S. dairy farms milk an average of 3,000 cows. Milk supply in the U.S. is increasing by 1 billion liters per year and dairy exporters are growing at 10%. Traditionally U.S. dairy exports are mostly shipped to Mexico, however increasingly the U.S. is shipping to Japan and other Asian countries. Australia and New Zealand will need to adjust to keep market share as the cost-competitive U.S. dairy industry continues to expand.
