At the end of June the Chinese government began to reopen poultry markets that had been closed since April in an attempt to contain the spread of the H7N9 virus. However, a new human case of H7N9 in Beijing on July 20th will likely delay the financial recovery of the poultry industry in China. The total losses to poultry related companies across China up to the end of June equaled $92.2 billion according to the National Poultry Industry Association. The average price of a pigeon dropped approximately 43% between March and now and the average price of a chicken dropped by 75%. Xiao Nan Guo Restaurant Holdings Ltd. suffered an 80% decrease in the sale of chicken dishes between April and June, and according to a report by Fujian Sunner Development Co. Ltd. a leading chicken supplier in China suffered a net profit loss of 295% annually.
