Russia’s Grain Trader Beating Cargill to Olam as Exports Surge

Russia’s OOO Trading House RIF has increased grain exports by eight-fold to beat the competition including Cargill and Olam to become the country’s second biggest grain exporter behind Glencore.  As recently as the 2012/13 season RIF ranked 14th exporting 231,000 tons, however after the terminal it uses on the Don River tripled its capacity last year, the company’s exports increased by more than any of the county’s top 20 exporters, shipping 1.95 million tons of grain for the period ending June 30, giving the company an 8% share of Russia’s grain exports. Glencore has a 13% share.   RIF has unseated Olam as the second biggest exporter – in the 2012/13 season Olam bought a terminal in Azov enabling the company to more than double its shipments to 1.85 million tons last season.  Sixty percent of RIF’s shipments are wheat bound for Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates.  RIF’s terminal on the Don River plans to further expand its capacity to 350,000 tons per month and add 30,000 tons of storage, but the lack of available credit in the country might hinder these plans.
